Howden Renew Headline Sponsorship for 2026 Howden Melrose Sevens

The Melrose Sevens, the world-famous birthplace of rugby sevens, is proud to announce that Howden, the global insurance broker, will continue as headline sponsor for the 2026 Howden Melrose Sevens, renewing the partnership following a successful first year in 2025.
The renewal reflects the strength of the relationship established during Howden’s inaugural year as headline partner for both Melrose Sevens and The British & Irish Lions, and reinforces both organisations’ shared commitment to rugby at every level - from grassroots participation through to elite international competition.
The 2026 Howden Melrose Sevens will take place on Friday 22nd and Saturday 23rd May 2026, delivering two days of elite men’s, women’s and U18 rugby at the iconic Greenyards in the Scottish Borders.
Building on the momentum of 2025, the tournament continues to grow in stature and impact. The Melrose Sevens attracts around 10,000 attendees to the Greenyards each year, with spectators, players, volunteers and staff all contributing to one of the largest annual sporting events in the South of Scotland. The tournament generates an estimated £2.5 million economic impact for the region (Scottish Borders Council, 2024), highlighting its significance not only within the rugby community but also to the wider local economy.
Doug Crawford, General Manager for Melrose Rugby Club, said:
“We’re delighted that Howden have renewed their headline sponsorship for 2026. Their first year as partner laid strong foundations, and we’re excited to build on last year’s success as we continue to develop the tournament.
“Melrose Sevens has always showcased the grassroots game, giving club players the chance to compete against some of the best. With Howden’s continued support, we’re focused on growing the women’s tournament, championing youth development, while also celebrating the heritage of the men’s knock-out competition, that makes Melrose Sevens so unique.
“As we look ahead to 2026, we’re building on that momentum - strengthening the rugby offering, enhancing the visitor experience and ensuring the tournament continues to benefit both the sport and the wider Borders community.”
Melrose Rugby and the Melrose Sevens hold a special place in the sport’s history, having shaped rugby sevens since its invention in 1883. The club has produced notable British & Irish Lions players including Craig Chalmers, Doddie Weir OBE, Peter Wright and Frank Laidlaw, as well as legendary Lions player and coach Jim Telfer.
As the home of rugby sevens, Melrose remains deeply rooted in tradition while continuing to evolve and inspire rugby communities around the world. The renewal of the headline partnership signals continued ambition for the tournament’s next chapter.
Kenny Hogg, CEO of Howden Scotland, added:
“We’re proud to be partnering with the Melrose Sevens again, reinforcing the success of the event last year - our clients and colleagues loved it! But for us this is about more than just the Saturday main event. It’s about investing year round in the grassroots, strengthening the women and girls’ game and developing the next generation of sporting stars.
“Magnificent Melrose is not merely the birthplace of rugby sevens, it’s where legends are born. And one day some of the class of Melrose Sevens 2026 might well be turning out for their national team or lining up for the first ever Howden Lions Women’s Series in New Zealand next year. So, there’s nowhere better to celebrate this incredible sport at all levels. You might say from grassroots to greatness!”
